Purify Your Blood with Ayurvedic Medicine

You may have heard that Ayurveda is the traditional medicine of India but surely you will wonder what this medicine is about. Well, the truth is that this medicine is based on the use of natural resources that our planet offers us to prevent or treat certain illnesses but always taking into account the particularity of each person, i.e., this medicine adapts to you and not you to medicine.

I knew a little about this medicine but did not know how to apply it. Today I know much more because I learned thanks to my husband who was and is an “anti-chemical remedy”. And then I arrived, the one who used to self-medicate (it is very bad but we all know what to take for headaches) and he used to tell me "Stop taking that medicine because your body then gets used to the compound" and it was there when he began to introduce me to the Ayurvedic world. When you are face to face with that world, everything changes, you immerse yourself differently and you live it in the first person from another angle.

For those of us who grew up in a world with laboratories and pharmacies around us, it is difficult to stop consuming remedies that later have side effects, in addition, in the West, Ayurvedic medicine is not used (it is not common in big cities) and although there are people interested in more natural medicine, unfortunately, from the place where I come from, we have not Ayurvedic pharmacies like in India. So here I was able to learn about some medicinal plants and herbs that I did not know their properties and I have even tried many Ayurvedic remedies that were prescribed by doctors for menstrual cramps, for example.

Indeed, even the scientific world has not been able to verify the effectiveness of some of these remedies. However, the results obtained in some experiments suggest that certain plants used in Ayurveda have active principles that can be therapeutic for some specific diseases. In fact, the active principles of many medicinal plants are effective and may form the basis for the development of future pharmaceutical drugs, as has happened with a large part of the currently available ones.

Why Purify the Blood?

Returning to the topic of medicinal herbs, which have no side effects, in this post I will focus on medicinal herbs that deal with the purification of the blood, to eliminate toxins from it.

According to Ayurveda, blood purification is a sign of good health, meaning that when the blood is impure, the body is prone to disease. That is why there are herbs that can remove toxins from the blood, boost the immune system, improve heart health, and prevent disease.

It's that, purifying the blood helps lower cholesterol levels, reduces cancer risks, and can also help decrease inflammation caused by harmful toxins in the body.

Below I will show you some great Ayurvedic herbs for blood purification and general body detox that we use in India.

Guduchi

Guduchi is the popular name for the Tinospora cordifolia plant, a typical plant of the Indian subcontinent that has been used for many years in Ayurvedic medicine both to eliminate toxins from the blood and to treat other ailments such as problems with the urinary system although science hasn’t been able to confirm its immortalizing properties, a growing number of studies support guduchi’s role as an adaptogen, a potent herb that can increase the body’s resistance to stress, anxiety, and increase the immune system.

Guduchi’s Health Benefits

In India, this plant has been used for thousands of years to obtain the following benefits:

  • Allergies and symptoms of hay fever.
  • Arthritis and inflammation.
  • Chronic skin disorders such as psoriasis or eczema.
  • Gout and rheumatic disorders.
  • Hepatitis and jaundice (supports the liver).
  • Immune system enhancement.
  • Preventing colds and flu.
  • Reducing the side effects of chemotherapy drugs.

Currently, Ayurvedic pharmacies sell Guduchi in tablets and powder. It can be taken 1 tablespoon twice a day, 1 tablet twice a day, or even, those who have the plant, crush the leaf to turn it into a paste and apply it to the skin in case of skin problems although the entire plant can be used. I know of people who take it to help the immune system in these times of Covid.

Neem

This is a tree that grows in India, Africa, and Iran, so depending on the region, it can adopt other names although its scientific name is Azadirachta indica. Both the leaves and their flowers, fruits, and seeds are used to make different medicines or therapeutic oils. In fact, here in my husband's house they always had this tree and my mother-in-law used and usually prepared meals with its leaves and also juices. Its taste is quite bitter and she always told me that it was very good for purifying the blood so I also consumed it.

According to Ayurveda, neem (in Hindi) is a very good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory as well as it is often used to fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi. On the other hand, it should not be consumed by children or if you are looking to get pregnant since it is also used as a contraceptive and your partner should not consume it either as it reduces the quality of sperm. Nor should it be consumed by pets.

It is possible to consume neem as juice, oils, face and body creams, in meals, teas, in powder, and capsules. If you take the syrup, you should consume it twice a day after meals and it is advised to drink it for up to 2 months and then rest. If it is in capsules for diabetes and blood sugar control, you should consume it twice a day before meals.
